Virginia - Zephyr Farm

Working Healthy

Begins with caring for a cob

This program is designed to help individuals impacted by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Individuals or family members of individuals who are/have experienced PTSD are eligible to participate.  A parternship assessment will be completed before official acceptance in the program.

The program is designed to promote physical and emotional wellbeing by coming to the farm to work around the horses for a few hours a week. In addition to being involved with general horse care, participants will be matched up with one of our horses to build a relationship with them through grooming, caring for and potentially “training/riding” their equine partner. We are NOT licensed therapists and we don’t claim to be. We just want to share the zen magic that comes from a horse bond.  This program is NOT limited to military and is open to anyone who is experiencing the effects of PTSD directly or indirectly.

Invidividuals accepted into the program come to the farm for regularly scheduled hours:

  • Learn every aspect of horse care including cleaning stalls, care and feeding, grooming, safe handling and riding (if interested).
  • Participate in Zephyr Farm public events and activities such as open houses, photo shoots, demonstrations, parades, and local shows, if interested and willing.
  • Are paired with one of our Gypsy Cobs to learn about caring for these amazing horses including care, grooming and maintenance unique to their particular horse-partner.
